Venice Biennale and Swatch Partnership
In honour of Swatch’s partnership with the 55th International Venice Biennale, Swatch has released two limited edition timepieces by Goto Design and renowned artist José Carlos Casado.
New York design duo Takaya Goto and Leslie Chi, known as Goto Design, collaborated with Massimiliano Gioni, curator of the 55th Venice Biennale, to create the graphic identity of the exhibition. Their designs for Swatch, ‘Blue Wild Face’ (pictured) and ‘Wild Face,’ examine contrasts of a split personality, like a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Spanish multimedia artist Casado’s timepiece design is a confrontation of the real with the unreal/unconscious. Titled, ‘OFF’ (pictured), the dial of his design encourages deep thought with a nucleolus bursting with colour and framed in black. The black slice is a reminder, the artist says, to “take time off” – 5 seconds every minute, 5 minutes every hour – to do something completely different. Casado was an artist in residence at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai in 2012.
‘The Swatch Art Peace Hotel’ in Shanghai, China, hosts contemporary artists from all over the world for up to six months. A dedicated Swatch booth in the Giardini area at la Biennale di Venezia features the faces and artworks of the 16 artists-in-residence at the extraordinary Swatch Art-Peace Hotel until Sunday 24 November 2013.
Earlier this year, the New Gent collection based on the balance of design and freedom was released. Swatch continues to innovate by collaborating with renowned artists, globally. A notable past collaboration was with London based photographer Rankin.
