The Act of Looking
Guy Yanai’s paintings are a vibrant reference to the everyday. Inspired by the artist’s use of colour, Band of Outsiders has incorporated a selection of his work within their Resort 14 collection.
For Yanai, painting had always been related to looking, and hence asks the question “what are we looking at now.” Yanai suggests that we are looking at images through screens. Whether we are looking at tennis shoes or at a mountain in Japan, they are mostly absorbed in photographic form, mediated by a computer screen or that of a phone or tablet. When producing a painting, his subjects always exist in four formats simultaneously: in reality, on screen, in the studio and printed on his inspiration material.
A recent collaboration with Band of Outsiders has brought Yanai’s paintings to life throughout the label’s Resort 14 collection. The same vibrant colours seen in his paintings are applied to sweaters, skirts and t-shirts.
The incorporation of Yanai’s works into fashion allows his message to come full circle.
An exhibition titled, ‘Lived & Laughed & Loved & Left’ at LaMontagne Gallery, Boston will display Yanai’s paintings until Wednesday 28 August 2013.
