Adding Light

‘Dark Mofo’ Festival brings light to the darker winter days, through large-scale public art, food, music, light and sound events across Hobart.

Following the success of ‘FOMA’ – the Festival of Music and Art through summer – the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Tasmania, Australia decided to extend their festival calendar to include a winter celebration of the dark. ‘Dark Mofo’ was born.

‘Dark Mofo’ will mark the beginning of a three month period of cultural activity encouraging people to embrace winter. Key ‘Dark Mofo’ events include:

– Spectra: Ryoji Ikeda will create a tower of pure light, a light sculpture that will stretch 15km high into the sky, visible on Friday 14 June 2013.

– Ian Burns: Burns will present ‘Afloat Asunder’ the result of a two-month investigative project, at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. The project is on display from Friday 14 June until Sunday 28 July 2013.

– Winter Feast: Taking place over three nights, prominent guest chefs including Frank Camorra (Movida), will prepare a feast to be served by the warmth of a fire. The feast takes place on Saturday June 20 until Mon 22 June 2013.

– Beam in own Thine Eye: A series of sight and sound based sculptures from artists including Anish Kapoor, Lawrence Weiner, Tim Bruniges, Kurt Hentschlager and Ryoji Ikeda. The sculptures are visible from Friday 14 of June until Sunday 28 July 2013.

– Sound to Light: In partnership with Melbourne’s ‘Light in Winter’ Festival artists and producers have created sound and light installations and performances have been created. The exhibition is on display from Friday 16 June until Sunday 23 June 2013, with performances taking place on Saturday 15 June 2013.

Dark Mofo is presented by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and takes place from Thursday 13 June until Sunday 23 June 2013.
