MPavilion 2015: Architecture of Wellbeing

MPavilion 2015 is fast approaching and this year celebrates the theme Architecture of Wellbeing.

MPavilion is a unique architecture commission and design event for Melbourne, Australia. Every year a new temporary pavilion is commissioned from leading international architects, creating a structure in Queen Victoria Gardens, Melbourne to house a wide range of talks, workshops, performances and installations throughout the months of October to February.

Building on unexpected collaborations across government, business and private sectors in design, tourism and hospitality, MPavilion forms a catalyst and meeting place for creatives and the public to explore design’s role in the creative city.

This year celebrates the theme Architecture of Wellbeing and explores how the built environment and physical structures affect people’s mood, health and overall outlook. This theme will be reflected not only in the structure of the pavilion itself but also in the range of events, talks, films, artworks and installations set to explore architecture, landscape and design.

The design of the second annual MPavilion 2015 was made by award-winning British architect Amanda Levete from London-based studio AL_A. Bringing to life an extraordinary, temporary pavilion; Levete designed a thought-provoking space for the public inspired by nature and technology. “We wanted to create the sensation of a tree canopy, with beautiful dappled light where you can see the sun, you can see the sky – a dreamy atmosphere that could inspire a number of events”, says Amanda Levete.

Honouring the 2015 theme, each evening at sunset, a Sunset Ritual will take place, creating a sensory meditative experience for visitors. Halos of light, synchronised to an immersive sound piece will be performed by the MPavilion structure itself. The Sunset Ritual is a collaboration between Levete, lighting designer Ben Cobham and includes a 30-minute soundscape by sound artist Matthias Schack – Arnott. The installation celebrates the interaction of sound, technology, design and art, supporting and reflecting the very reason d’etre of MPavilion, and allows for the public to experience and interact with these elements.

MPavilion will officially open on Monday 5 October 2015, and will continue until Sunday 7 February 2016.
