Sebastião Salgado: Genesis

A glimpse into the world untainted by modern life is the basis of the most recent project by world-renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado, titled Genesis.

The works of the photographer draw the viewer into the splendour of the planet’s majestic nature and provides an unbridled exploration of human communities in distant corners of the world. The latest critically acclaimed collection of 245 black-and-white photographs – titled Genesis – are exhibited at the National Museum of Singapore and is the Paris-based Brazilian photographer’s first solo showcase in Asia.

Genesis is a passionate project that spanned from 2004 to 2011, taking place around the world. The exhibition divides the images captured into five key sections that include: Amazonia and Pantanal, which looks to the Amazon jungle; Planet South, focusing on Antarctica; Africa, which explores both the people and areas where there are no signs of live; Sanctuaries, a look into isolated islands; and Northern Spaces, which looks to the areas that surround the Arctic Circle.

The series is Salgado’s third long-term visual exploration of global issues after Workers (1993) and Migrations and Portraits (2000), anchoring this time on our natural environment.

Genesis remains on display at the National Museum of Singapore until Sunday 31 August 2014.
