Paper’s Lost Voice

‘El Papel de la Movida: the role of Movida. Art on Paper in the Madrid of the eighties’ celebrates the integral role of illustration on paper in the 1980s La Movida movement. La Movida contributed to presenting Madrid as a cultural capital. This exhibition is on show at the Museo ABC, Madrid.

La Movida was a time of cultural significance for Madrid, a time where the city was alive with artistic passion and creativity. Museo ABC’s choice to focus on this period aims to bring the new generations closer to the artistic production of those years of creative and social blooming.

The exhibition focuses on the role of La Movida and the paper illustrations it generated. From a world today that is driven by digital communication, ‘El Papel de la Movida’ looks back at a time where cultural messages where primarily sent via paper. This material, paper, became the distinguishing feature of the time and nowadays is necessary to understand what happened then.

‘El Papel de la Movida’ is divided into six chapters – drawings and illustration, photography, graphic design, music, fashion, cinema, and press. This exhibition features over 200 designers with a focus on works on paper. Not limited to art, the documentation of the era is seen through various forms of ephemera from comics and magazine covers to film scripts and song lyrics.

‘El Papel de la Movida is on display until Sunday 22 September at Museo ABC, Madrid, Spain.
