Berlin Wonderland: Wild Years Revisited
1990–1996

On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a photographic exhibition that explores this pivotal time in Berlin’s history is set to open.

In the early years of the German reunification, Berlin-Mitte was a city district dropped out of time. Empty streets, abandoned buildings, a no-man’s land situated right at the new heart of the city just waiting to be claimed. The breakdown of the former GDR left a temporary lawlessness in its wake that artists, punks, squatters and visionaries were quick to use to their creative advantage. These riotous years laid the foundations of the Berlin known today, with the sleek galleries and exclusive shopping district of Mitte.

Titled Berlin Wonderland: Wild Years Revisted, 1990–1996, the exhibition follows the recent Gestalten release of the same name and will feature pictures from the book, as well as some previously unpublished images. Anke Fesel and Chris Keller of bobsairport, a Berlin-based photo agency representing mainly photographers from the city, have curated the exhibition. Photographers within the exhibition and publication include Ben de Biel, Hendrik Rauch, Philipp von Recklinghausen, Stefan Schilling, Hilmar Schmundt, Andreas Trogisch and Rolf Zöllner.

Berlin Wonderland: Wild Years Revisted, 1990–1996 opens on Thursday 16 October 2014 and will remain on display at the Gestalten Space until Saturday 22 November 2014. The accompanying hardcover title is available through Gestalten.
