Paris Men’s Fashion Week AW15/16: Day 1

Paris Men’s Fashion Week AW15/16 Day 1 has has come to close with designers Christophe Lemaire, Walter Van Beirendonck Valentino and Haider Ackermann in focus. Their creative diversity, unique cultural feel and strong political messaging reinforced why they’re at the forefront of the fashion world.

Perhaps the most remarkable event of the evening was the message that Belgian designer, Walter Van Beirendonck sent out through his collection: “Stop Terrorising Our World”. The slogan was worn on the torso of a male model and marked the opening of the designer’s show. Walter Van Beirendonck expressed to media that he had “to react” to the early January bloodshed at the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the supermarket hostage siege that followed.

The world of Valentino opened the doors to its AW15/16 collection as it drew on the strong, colour-rich geometry of many past artistic collaborations. Designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli brought to life a range of garments with angular, sharp, and pattern-rich displays. Myriad references including Scottish tartan and the now-signature militaristic camouflage were also shown within the collection. Altogether the collection had a strong feel of the sixties with geometric patterns on sweaters and detailed coats.

In a completely different style, Haider Ackermann, presented a collection that was simultaneously strange and beautiful. The Colombian designer made use of a great variety of fabrics including leather, suede and velvet ranging in colours from black, white, and brown to velvet red. With this combination Haider Ackermann created grace through layers put together with ease resulting in carefree yet styled looks.

Christophe Lemaire presented a collection with tailored, crisp and structured styles and a colour palette that kept to blacks, greys, whites and browns. The final looks of the collection saw models present ponchos as over garments, which steered away from the structured notion of the previously seen coats and jackets.
