Björk at MoMA: A Retrospective

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York will soon open its doors to an exhibition on the career and work of musician, composer and singer Björk. The exhibition is a retrospective of the artist’s bold and original work over the last 20 years showcased through sound, film, visuals, instruments, objects and costumes including her eight full-length albums.

The exhibition will be dispersed across MoMA, forming different sub-exhibitions and spaces, each of them telling part of the Björk story.

In the museum lobby, instruments used on the album Biophilia (2011), including a gameleste, pipe organ, gravity harp, and Tesla soil, will play songs from the album at different times during the day.

In the Marron Atrium on the second floor, two spaces have been created for the exhibition. One presents a new sound and video installation for the song Black Lake, which was commissioned by MoMA and features on Björk’s new album Vulnicura (2015). A trailer from the Black Lake project, which was directed by Andrew Thomas Huang, has recently been released. It can be viewed opposite. The second space is a cinema room that will display a retrospective in music videos, starting from the album Debut (1993) and ending in Biophilia.

On the museum’s third floor an interactive, location-based audio experience, called Songlines, will take visitors on a journey through Björk’s albums with a personal and poetic, biographical narrative, written by acclaimed Icelandic writer Sjón. The narrative is supported by a series of visuals, objects, and costumes including the Swan Dress (2001) by Marjan Pejowski, the Biophilia Tour Dress (2013) by Iris van Herpen and robots, designed by Chris Cunningham, from the music video All Is Full of Love.

The Björk retrospective will be on display from Sunday 8 March – Sunday 7 June 2015.
