SIR by Mario Testino

TASCHEN have released a new book titled SIR by Mario Testino that explores the evolution of male identity over the last 30 years. SIR is Testino’s largest book to-date and features an essay by Pierre Borhanm, an interview with Patrick Kinmonth, and a range of previously unpublished works from Testino’s archive.

The book chronicles masculinity in all its manifestations through over 300 photographs and an interrelated mixture of costume, tradition, gender play, portraiture, photojournalism and fashion.

By revisiting the male stereotypes from the dandy and the gentleman, the macho and the fey, and the world-famous face to the unknown passer-by, SIR tells the story of the changing ways in which men have been seen in photography and fashion as well the way they look at themselves in terms of image, personal style and attitude to face and body.

Each photograph in the book demonstrates a unique point of view and connection between photographer and sitter. Observations of Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Jude Law and Colin Firth are as sharp as they are questioning. In a different manner David Beckham, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feature for their courageous role in redefining male identity. Altogether, these portraits display a period of change in men’s role, style and appearance all caught and represented by Testino.

Testino who is Peruvian-born is known for his liberated accounts of dress and attitude. As an influential photographer in the industry, Testino’s clients include Vanity Fair, French Vogue, Burberry, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana. His solo exhibitions have been displayed in museums and galleries all over the world including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

SIR by Mario Testino boasts Swiss binding, Japanese cloth and is delivered in a hardcover metallic slipcase. It is available in a limited edition of 1000 copies, each signed by Testino himself.
