Troika: Limits of Known Territory

Artist trio Troika presents a new exhibition of illusion titled Limits of Known Territory.

The artistic trio made up of German Eva Rucki and Conny Freyer and French Sebastien Noel formed in 2003. Since their establishment as Troika, they have dedicated their work to exploring ideas related to man-made structures, control, repetitive actions and systems and how these conflict, or unite with the unpredictable, the unknowable and irrational. Their contemporary art often ask questions of why we know what we know, and whether this knowledge is trustworthy.

The trio’s latest exhibition in Bogotá makes no exception. Limits of Known Territory features works ranging from drawings made with electric charge, to sculpture and a site-specific installation. Common for these works are their deceptive nature, and particularly the illusion created through the installation.

The site-specific installation is brought to life through a flooded 200 square metre concrete gallery space. Scattered across the gallery are pathways of stepping-stones on which visitors can navigate across the space, which echoes the sound of water streams, dripping from the ceiling.

Upon closer look the streams turn out to behave quite unusually. Some seem to be frozen in time, others run faster than the norm of gravitation allows, while others again run more slowly, or in reverse. This illusion is achieved through lights installed in the ceiling, which flicker at speeds unseen by the human eye.

According to Troika, the exhibition is based on mixed arts of metaphysics and science. It questions the systems and models that humans establish for themselves to create order, purpose and stability. These models, whether scientific or religious are set up to eliminate uncertainty, and over time become status quo. The water droplets in the installation create a disruption that leads to re-evaluation of such assumptions and systems.

Limits of Known Territory will be on display until Saturday 5 September 2015 at NC Arte in Bogotá, Columbia.
