Interview with Charles Pétillon

Charles Pétillon aims to challenge the everyday with his unique and explosive works that are filling spaces around the globe with improbable and poetic visual objects.

The Paris-based photographer and artist has unveiled his vibrant installation works Invasions, which sees meandering trails and bulbous batches of white balloons ‘invading’ various spaces. From playgrounds to buildings, abandoned homes, secluded forests, and even 100,000 balloons under the roof of London’s famous Covent Garden market (piece titled Heartbeat), Pétillon’s works are a whimsical visual marvel that can challenge the way we perceive space.

We delved deeper into Pétillon’s world, speaking to him about his artistic endeavours, Invasions series, photography and the meaning of the materials he uses.

fluoro. With a focus on the photo series Invasions, why do you find it necessary to create pieces that change the way people perceive everyday life and scenes?
Dans la série de photos Invasions en particulier, pourquoi trouvez-vous nécessaire de créer des œuvres d’art qui modifient la façon dont les gens perçoivent les scènes de la vie quotidienne?

Charles Pétillon. We’re used to seeing things, we’re not necessarily used to looking at them. By introducing an unusual, unconventional element into a space, I force people to look and to question. In this way, it’s possible to create a new perspective on this space.

Nous avons l’habitude de voir les choses, nous n’avons pas forcément l’habitude de les regarder. En introduisant dans l’espace un élément insolite, décalé, alors je force le regard et le questionnement. Ainsi, il est possible de créer un nouveau point de vue sur cet espace.

f. How do you select the locations and themes for your installation projects?
Comment choisissez-vous les lieux et les thèmes pour vos projets d’installation?

CP. The choice of the locations for the installations is fundamental. I attach so much importance to the choice of a location as to the topic, because the location and the topic are one. The space in which I install my balloons becomes part of the artwork. So the configuration alternately maintains a dialogue or a power relationship with the location.

Le choix des lieux pour réaliser les installations est fondamental. J’attache autant d’importance au choix du lieu qu’au sujet abordé, car le lieu et le sujet ne font qu’un. L’espace dans lequel j’installe mes ballons devient constitutif de l’œuvre. Dès lors, l’installation entretient tour à tour un dialogue ou un rapport de force avec le lieu.

f. Why have you chosen to work with balloons? Why are they white?
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de travailler avec des ballons? Pourquoi sont-ils blancs?

CP I chose balloons because they’re a universal object. Whether you’re a child or an adult, and whatever continent you live in, you know what a balloon is. It’s a simple object, it’s not ostentatious, and everyone knows its size. I chose the colour white because it’s neither rich nor poor, it’s very often a symbol of purity, of rest and a form of tranquillity. The whiteness strengthens the opposition, the contrast and the absurdity of the materials of the location of the shoot. The combination of the abstract shapes of the balloons to those of the environment makes it possible to create improbable and poetical visual objects.

J’ai choisi des ballons parce qu’il s’agit d’un objet universel. Que vous soyez un enfant ou un adulte et quel que soit le continent que vous habitez, vous savez ce qu’est un ballon. Il s’agit d’un objet simple, qui n’est pas ostentatoire, et dont tout le monde connaît la dimension. J’ai choisi la couleur blanche car c’est ni riche, ni pauvre, c’est très souvent symbole de pureté, de repos et une forme de tranquillité. La blancheur renforce l’opposition, le contraste et l’absurdité avec les matériaux du lieu de prise de vues. La conjugaison des formes abstraites des ballons à celles de l’environnement permettent ainsi de créer des objets visuels improbables et poétiques.

f. Your interest in photography was born at an early age. What did photography mean to you then and what does it mean to you now?
Vous vous intéressez à la photographie depuis votre plus jeune âge. Qu’est-ce que la photographie signifiait pour vous à l’époque et que signifie-t-elle pour vous aujourd’hui?

CP Photography for me is akin to a way of life. It obliges me to look at things, observe them. It’s a kind of prism through which we look at existence.

La photographie s’apparente pour moi à une façon de vivre. Elle m’oblige à regarder les choses, les observer. Il s’agit d’une sorte de prisme au travers duquel on regarde l’existence.

f. Tell us about your work in photography for fashion brands and publications. Does this work still retain your personal touch? If so, how and why is it important to you?
Parlez-nous de vos travaux en photographie pour les marques et les publications de mode Ces travaux conservent-ils votre touche personnelle? Si oui, comment et pourquoi est-ce important pour vous?

Yes, my still lifes in editorials add a personal touch. This work is important because it brings me balance. The method, the expectations, the function of these still life works are very different and very complementary.

Oui, mes natures mortes en édito portent une touche personnelle. Ce travail est important car il m’apporte de l’équilibre. La méthode, les attentes, la fonction de ces travaux de natures mortes sont très différents et très complémentaires.

The eclectic talent of Pétillon has led him to create work which stimulate the sense for observation, leading it’s viewers to discover what is otherwise ignored or not considered. The work of Pétillon is a testament to the creativity which leaves his admirers excited for what he has in store for 2016.
