The Journey to Perfection

Behind every chair Piet Hein Eek designs, there is a story; he calls them fairytales. Hein Eek will be sharing his narratives with a retrospective of his chairs at MOST, as part of Salone Internazionale del Mobile.

Hein Eek has designed and produced dozens of chairs. Some pieces signified the start of an entire collection of furniture, while others evolved as the outcome of a collection. Hein Eek is captured by the process of making chairs – “the moment, the client and, first and foremost, the material, technique and handicraft.”

A mandatory component of his process, is that he publishes a book of every chair and seating object he ever conceives. “The stories are often more important to me than the design itself.” While he considers his favorite chair a failure he suggests that “the journey towards perfection without achieving the goal is so telling.”

Hein Eek’s chair retrospective will be on display at MOST during Salone del Mobile from Tuesday 9 April until Sunday 14 April 2013, in Milan, Italy.
