‘Le Surréalisme et l’objet’

‘Le Surréalisme et l’objet’ (Surrealism and the Object) at the Pompidou Centre, Paris is the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Surrealist sculpture.

Surrealism occupies a singular place in the history of the 20th century avant-garde due to its international influence and longevity. The exhibition traces the various stages in the history of the Surrealist, documenting their approach to creating sculptures from everyday objects. Key pieces including the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp and Joan Miró’s sculptures are on display.

The exhibition also highlights the ongoing influence of the movement on contemporary creative culture. Artists such as Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Théo Mercier and Heim Steinbach have all been inspired by principles advocated by the Surrealist object.

The structure of ‘Le Surréalisme et l’objet’ is inherent to the way it is viewed. Comprised of a circuit of twelve rooms the pieces are removed from a chorological context. By removing this sense of order, visitors can be further immersed in the dreamlike intentions of the Surrealists.

‘Le Surréalisme et l’objet’ is curated by Didier Ottinger and is on display until Monday 3 March 2014 at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, France.
