X+Q Art at Paul Smith

Paul Smith’s Melbourne boutique in Australia will present an exhibition of handmade sculptures by X+Q Art.

The brainchild of contemporary artists Xiang Jing and Qu Guangci, Chinese art collective X+Q Art construct colourful and vivid stories with their arresting sculptural pieces. With a background in sculpture, Jing is known for her works centred on the body, using natural forms to investigate issues essential to the world and humanity. Her works focus on direct experiences. Guangci has attracted widespread attention for his contemporary sculpture language and his post-political expression techniques. Guancgi’s work often presents a dual nature, providing infinite space for the viewer’s interpretation.

The exhibition at Paul Smith’s Melbourne boutique brings together two series by the artists, creating a dialogue between the works and the Paul Smith space. In her ‘I Have Seen Happiness’ sculpture series, Jing aims to celebrate youth and create an optimistic mood with her vibrant rabbit sculptures flocked in rich shades of red, blue, yellow and green. Guangci fuses Eastern and Western sentiments, referencing both in his series of winged oriental angels. Similarly bright to Jing’s series, Guangci’s ‘The Angelest Quin’ series also aims to illuminate visitors instilling brightness and positivity through art.

X+Q Art was founded in 2010, with product ranging from sculptures to accessories. X+Q Art will be on display at Paul Smith, Melbourne from Wednesday 26 February until Thursday 1 April 2014.
