Milan Fashion Week AW14/15: Statements

Fendi and Prada’s AW14/15 collections at Milan Fashion Week held messages of strength, injecting the week with symbolism and confirming its place as a fashion capital.

Fendi’s collection was a dark and bold presentation. Fur, a key fabric for the house, was used heavily throughout the collection and applied to large hoods, coats and voluminous jackets and bags. In a subtle symbol, models wore an orchid flower on their lapels – the flower is known to have represented virility to the Ancient Greeks.

Cara Delevingne opened and closed the show, walking down the runway and dangling a Karl Lagerfeld Fendi Little Monster from her hand. Delevingne’s personality on the runway matched with the garments and brands she displayed, presenting herself as a key figure, also appearing frequently throughout last week’s London Fashion Week.

Prada’s collection was equally strong and featured models of both genders. Titled ‘Act II’, the collection referenced the act that was started at the Milan AW14 Menswear collections, where women with sleek ponytails walked the runway, wearing women’s garments. This mode of presentation challenged the separation of Menswear and the Ready to Wear fashion weeks.

Like Fendi, fur was a significant element to the Prada AW14/15 collection; a key feature of the collection was a bright red fur dress. Garments featured equally bold colours; structured dresses were adorned in vibrant prints; and coats were lined with colour. The men’s garments within the show were more subdued and included structured black suits. Adding drama to the collection, a string orchestra performed in a pit below the runway, playing to the runway above them.
