Dubai: Art Week

fluoro provides an insight into the key events taking place during Dubai Art Week.

Dubai Art Week is an initiative that encompasses key cultural events around the city of Dubai, with the aim to explore the city as a cultural centre. The initiative also looks beyond Dubai, to the cultural activity taking place across the United Arab Emirates.

Design Days Dubai

The region’s first dedicated design fair, Design Days Dubai, returns for its third edition.

In 2014 Design Days Dubai will introduce an annual ‘Discover’ section. The first edition will be presented in cooperation with Institut Français in the UAE, and will be dedicated to giving four young and fresh design galleries from France an international platform to exhibit works. Galleries on display include Ymer&Malta, Galerie Gosserez, NextLevel Galerie and Galerie S. Bensimon.

“Design Days Dubai has evolved and developed in harmony with the region’s increasing appetite for design, and reflects the host city’s status as a hub for innovative design and arts in the region, and beyond,” said Cyril Zammit, director of Design Days Dubai.

Design Days Dubai takes place at ‘The Venue’, next to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalif from Monday 17 – Saturday 21 March 2014. The fair will then travel with a series of ‘Design Stories’ events to key cities in the region.

Art Dubai

Art Dubai, the leading international art fair in the Middle East and South Asia, offers the opportunity to engage with a comprehensive and promising line-up of artists from across the region.

The fair features participants from over 34 countries. For the first time, the galleries are presented in three distinct programmes: Contemporary, Modern, inaugurating this year, and Marker, which is the curated section of invited art spaces and galleries focusing on Central Asia and the Caucasus in 2014.

An innovative aspect of the fair sees a radio station established for its duration. ‘Art Dubai Radio’ goes behind the scenes of the fair with interviews from curators and artists, while also broadcasting sound pieces from the region.

The eighth edition of the fair takes place from Wednesday 19 – Sunday 22 March 2014.

Spanning an array of mediums the pieces created include audio and video installation, multi-disciplinary initiatives, artistic installations,  music performances, and visual arts, such as painting, photography, and sculptures.

Her Highness Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum, Founder and Director of FN Designs, and Japanese architect and programme director Kayoko Iemura curated the artworks.
