mastermind JAPAN: Identity
mastermind JAPAN was started by Masaaki Homma in 1997 with an emphasis on ‘casual luxury’ which aimed to rediscover a culture and apply it to contemporary fashion design.
The SS12 collection’s theme of ‘identity’ is embodied in prints featuring designer Masaaki Homma’s handwritten skull design and message.
mastermind JAPAN collaborated with Timberland to develop a unique shoe as part of this collection with the mastermind JAPAN symbol of the skull more evident than ever. This has a particular relevance to Homma. “To me the skull symbolizes a fight until death to fulfill one’s destiny!” he says.
Skulls are a poignant motif in Buddhism and other religions where it is representative of the cyclical pattern of existence and the fact that beauty can be found in both life and death. “The skull stands for impartiality,” adds Homma, “because all living things must eventually die.”
The brand will come to a stop with its SS13 collection.
