ZEE by Kurt Hentschlager
ZEE aims for a ‘tabula rasa’ (blank slate), where perceptions are reset and recalibrated.
The audience enters a space where vision is totally obscured by dense fog. Lights pulse and flash through the space, creating artificial figures that appear to be moving in constant flux.
What one sees is not what one ‘sees’. Light wave interference phenomena cause images to be synthesized inside the brain to create a ‘mind-scape’. An ambient soundscape connects to these interference patterns to create a truly immersive experience.
Upon exiting, one finds a seemingly purified version of the world; one where everything makes that much more sense after the sensual pummel of ZEE.
Artist Kurt Hentschlager is a master of immersion. The installation is a purely abstract experience created with artificial fog, stroboscopes, pulse lights and surround sound.
ZEE will be at FACT Liverpool during the ‘Abandon Normal Devices’ Festival from Thursday 29 September to Friday 28 November 2011.
