Battles: Gloss Drop
New York City’s dynamic experimental rock group Battles will release their second full-length studio album, ‘Gloss Drop’ on Friday 3 June 2011 through Inertia.
The highly anticipated record is a mix of genres and features contributions from well respected artists such as the UK’s Synth-pop pioneer Gary Numan, Chilean born minimal techno producer Matias Aguayo, the frontman of Japanese Alt-rock band The Boredoms, Yamantaka Eye, and from their very own NYC, Kazu Makino of cult indie rock trio Blonde Redhead.
“I don’t think challenging, new music has to be super serious all the time. That’s really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring.” Battles drummer John Stanier said.
Contrasting complex and counter melodies in fiendishly interwoven rounds, ‘Gloss Drop’ is a rock unit, which manages to juxtapose tribal rhythms and carnivale music alongside tactile funk, and reinterpreted dance beats. All the while, conducting an assault on mediocrity and waging a fearsome campaign against genre conventions.
Battles came together in 2002 as a brilliant amalgamation that came from the ashes of other bands. The original band featured drummer John Stanier (Mark Of Cain, Helmet, Tomahawk), guitarists Ian Williams (Don Caballero) and Dave Konopka (Lynx), and vocalist Tyondai Braxton. After extensive touring in Australia as part of the Big Day Out, Brian Eno-curated Vivid festival and their own headline shows, Braxton left the band in late 2010, after the completion of Gloss Drop’s recording.
New album will be released on Friday 3 June 2011 through Inertia.
