Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2012
Melbourne, Australia – famous for its laneway bars, alley clubs and semi-hidden backstreet venues, as well as its experimental and creative vibe. The enigmatic city will soon be inundated with the world’s best jazz musicians and performers for the 2012 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
Featuring fresh collaborations and the best of iconic jazz stars, the festival will surprise and enlighten with its robust and engaging line-up.
Some fluoro picks:
Future Now: featuring vocalist José James, MC Taylor McFerrin and pianist Robert Glasper, this one of a kind event will boldly challenge preconceptions of musical expression, taking hip-hop, R&B, soul and post-modern jazz to new and inspiring places.
Hiromi: The Trio Project: Hiromi’s ability to blend jazz, progressive rock and classical styles has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Few artists can boast a gig with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra at age 14, a personal invitation to play with Chick Corea at 17, and a mentorship with Ahmad Jamal at the Berklee College of Music before launching their professional career. Hiromi will bring her explosive style to the stage with bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Philips
McCoy Tyner Trio: McCoy Tyner is jazz piano royalty; an overpowering presence whose music has helped shape the evolution of jazz since the early 1960s, and an original member of John Coltrane’s ‘classic’ quartet. Featuring saxophonist Chris Potter and vocalist José James, the night promises to be a soulful and contemporary re-reading of Coltrane’s groundbreaking work.
The Melbourne International Jazz Festival opens on Friday 1 June and runs until Sunday 10 June 2012.
