Jason deCaires Taylor: Human Nature
Jason deCaires Taylor’s first solo exhibition, Human Nature, focuses on documenting the artists evolution of his work through photography, sculpture and video.
British born Taylor spent a large portion of his childhood exploring the coral reefs of Malaysia, which naturally lead to an interest in the world that lies beneath the waters surface. After becoming a scuba diving instructor he combined his love of diving, conservation and art to produce public projects in aquatic environments.
Using specialised pH neutral materials, Taylor casts cement into full-scale figures and objects to create his underwater masterpieces. The aim of these underwater masterpieces, is to encourage the formulation of artificial reefs to act as an attraction for divers, this then subsequently allows the neighbouring endangered natural reefs some time and space to replenish and grow.
Human Nature displays photographs of Taylor’s work from around the world. The exhibition evokes a sense of surreal narratives, sunken worlds and forgotten civilisations.
Human Nature will run until Saturday 28 July 2012, at Johnathan LeVine Gallery in New York, US.
