Julia deVille: Sarcophagus
Julia deVille has a fascination with death. She has a similar sensibility to her counterparts of the Victorian era – a fascinating acceptance of death and the celebration of the life that has passed.
As seen in fluoro7, the seventh issue of the multi-award winning fluoro magazine, deVille’s work crosses into different worlds. Her work is not rendered in a gloomy manner, rather reclaimed as beautiful reminders of our mortality.
Sarcophagus, an exhibition launching at Sophie Gannon Gallery later this month, showcases her latest work.
“My show is themed on the way we eat and use animals in our society. I am highlighting the negative/unknown aspects of the meat, dairy and poultry industries at the same time trying to illustrate ethical options to my audience,” said deVille.
deVille will use the following materials: two calves, a dog, a deer, three still born deer, four lambs, three piglets, two kittens, a cat, a peacock (head), two bunnies, 30 or so birds, 60+ chicks, 4000 carats of garnets, hundreds of pearls, diamond dust, 6 kilos of silver and 200 ruby carats.
The exhibition with run from Tuesday 24 July – Saturday 1 September 2012.
