Doping Thrower
In the heart of London, Fabrica presents Doping Thrower, an art installation by the Cuban artist Erik Ravelo.
The famous work by Athenian sculpture Myron, Discobolus (the discus thrower) from around 445 B.C, was a symbol of the passion for the Olympic Games and of the cult of human physical perfection. This was the inspiration of the Doping Thrower which itself reflects the cult of human physical perfection.
The Doping Thrower is completely smothered in hundreds of multicolour capsules, phials and tablets and even a drip feed which invites us all to reflect on the abuse of drug-based substances and treatments to improve an athlete’s performance by artificial means.
Established in 1994, Fabrica invites young artists and designers from around the world and gives them an annual study grant. The young creatives are offered the opportunity of training in their field and a wealth of resources and contacts for developing, under expert guidance, cultural and social communication projects in the fields of design, visual communication, photography, interaction, video, music and publishing. Fabrica is based in Treviso, Italy in a complex restored and enlarged by Tadao Ando.
Doping Thrower closes on Monday 6 August 2012 at the Dray Walk Gallery (Old Truman Brewery), London, UK.
