Campari: Apertivo Hour
fluoro’s associate editor, Audrey Bugeja, witnesses’ the elegance and tradition of Italy in Australia, with thanks to Campari.
Campari is a contemporary and charismatic classic. The recipe has remained unchanged since it originated in Novra, Italy in 1860. The passionate Italian style of Campari has made it a famous brand around the world.
Campari took a select few members of the fluoro team on a journey into ‘Apertivo Hour’, a traditional practice that takes place usually between, 5-7pm each day throughout Italy. The experience was brought to the shores of Australia.
Taken through the streets of Melbourne on the back of a Vespa, we were given a sensation of being somewhere else. As we arrived at Bar Ampere, a host who was keen for us to step in for a lesson in the perfect ‘Apertivo Hour’ welcomed us.
Aperol Spritz, Campari Highball and a Classic Cin Cin – three famous beverages, which are enjoyed daily in Italy were the focus of the experience. We were guided through the history and tradition of Campari and two other brands that came under ‘Gruppo Campari’, Aperol and Cinzano. It was surprising to know that some of the spirits dated back to the 1700’s. Our host provided an insight into the flavours, colours and the techniques of preparation.
The aim of the ‘Apertivo Hour’ means much more than a low alcohol beverage. It’s the main social event of the day, a chance to meet and converse with friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Apertivo’s are also designed to open up ones appetite in preparation for a main meal.
This experience demonstrated the importance of this time in the day where the opportunity to talk, recap on the day and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues is offered. Melbournians have a strong appreciation for Italian design, fashion and culture now it’s time to open their appetite to the ‘Apertivo Hour’.
