Independence: The history of graphic design in Singapore since the 1960s
An interesting book by Justin Zhuang that not only provides a historic document, it celebrates independent graphic design agencies in Singapore since the 1960s.
This 375-page book demonstrates how graphic design progressed in Singapore, from simple artwork to utilising all media. It highlights the collaborations between graphic designers and designers from other industries, allowing them to achieve more together than they could alone; and the government’s contribution promoting the industry in the 70s, which resulted in a number of multinationals setting up in Singapore.
There are almost 300 pages of examples of graphic design, starting from 1963. We see the progression, from logo designs to some really clever self promotions that brilliantly demonstrates the importance for designers and artists to tap into their own culture. This is something I couldn’t agree more with, as we live in an era that sees us spending so much time looking elsewhere, when often the inspiration or solution is right in front of us.
