Be a Man!
Ever since Italy’s Supreme Court ruled that it was a crime to tell a man he had ‘no balls’ — masculinity was suddenly in the spotlight again.
Tackling issues surrounding masculinity from a variety of perspectives Sumarria Lunn Gallery, London presents Be A Man! Featuring both male and female artists, the exhibition poses the questions: How does a man see himself as a man? How do women see men? And how do men see other men?
The exhibition includes pieces from New York-based artist Hank Willis Thomas, who works primarily with themes relating to history, popular culture and identity – in particular African-American masculinity. In the 20 paintings featured within the exhibition, from Willis Thomas, each has a different arrangement of the text “I Am A Man,” displaying the multitude of representations and contradictions within the male identity.
IdenBe A Man! is on display from Thursday 14 March until Friday 19 April 2013 at Sumarria Lunn Gallery, London.
