Ron Mueck Reveals New Sculptures

A Ron Mueck exhibition is a rare event. Opening today the artist reveals three new sculptures at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris; his first major exhibition in Europe since 2005.

Mueck’s human figures are meticulously detailed, with surprising changes of scale that place them as far from academic realism as they are from pop art or hyperrealism. He works slowly in his small North London studio, making time itself an important element in his creative process.

The three new works that will be shown at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain include:

– Couple Under an Umbrella (300 x 400 x 350 cm); removed from the context of the beach, the immense figures contrast with the environment of the gallery.

– Woman with Shopping (113 x 46 x 30cm); explores the theme of the relationship between mother and child.

– Young Couple (89 x 43 x 23 cm); the circumstance of an ordinary street scene becomes unclear when viewed at a reduced scale.

As part of the exhibition, Gautier Deblonde has made a new film recording the creation of the new works. Revealing the reclusive artist at work further emphasizes the sensitivity and power of Ron Mueck’s sculptures.

Ron Mueck is an Australian artist based in London. His works are on display from Wednesday 16 April 2013 until Sunday 29 September 2013 at Fondation Cartier, Paris, France.
