The Soviet Union, Illustrated
A hand drawn mural adorns the walls of Artek in St Petersburg, Russia, visually representing three stages of destruction of the Soviet Union.
Artek, a bar, café and exhibition space takes its name, from a famous Soviet summer camp that aimed to shape the new Soviet man. The mural acts as a metaphor for the collapse of the ambitions of the camp, using a boy scout, to perhaps show the naivety of the child at that time. As the dreams of the Soviet Union collapsed so did the hopes for the camp, which was supposed to be an international place of the national feuds, political differences and spiritual emptiness.
The third stage of the mural shapes the continents of the earth’s core through fragments of the cracked head. This image is intended to symbolise the idea of cosmopolitanism as a means against political pressure and nationalism.
Dopludo Collective, the team behind the illustration, are based in two studios in Vienna, Austria and St Petersburg.
