A Visual Conversation
Conversation 6: Jason Hanasik and Berndnaut Smilde brings together the two artists in an exhibition that explores the idea of home, dislocation and impermanence.
Conversations is an ongoing series at San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) which pairs local and international based artists. San Francisco based artist Jason Hanasik and Amsterdam based Berndnaut Smilde have been brought together in Conversation 6 as their work tends to dwell on concepts such as transition, ephemerality, dislocation and documentation.
Jason Hanasik’s new installation for Conversation 6: Jason Hanasik and Berndnaut Smilde revolves around the recent loss of his family’s home to foreclosure. At the centre of the installation, is a home video of the family, with Hanasik as a child, walking around the beautiful site where their future home was to be built.
Berndnaut Smilde grew up fascinated by Dutch seascape paintings and their impressive skies. “My grandparents had one with really threatening looking clouds. I remember I was intrigued by the power of it… there was something big, magical and dark about to happen in that painting… I wanted to see if it could be done.” For Conversation 6: Jason Hanasik and Berndnaut Smilde Smilde he will exhibit the documentation of one of his cloud installations as wallpaper; he has also created a cloud in the space.
“The scale of Smilde’s wallpaper of an architectural environment will take over the Main Gallery, while Hanasik will invite viewers to literally step into his house” says Meg Shiffler, Galleries Director.
Conversation 6: Jason Hanasik and Berndnaut Smilde is on view February 15, 2013 through April 27, 2013 at SFAC Main Gallery, US.
