Takashi Murakami
Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is showing a set of new paintings at Galerie Perrotin, Hong-Kong that feature his famous alter-ego Mr. Dob.
Very early in his career, Murakami developed a unique style that combined contemporary processes with the precision and virtuosity of traditional Japanese art techniques, such as Ukiyo-e engraving. Inspired by Manga and Kawaii culture, his paintings are filled with monstrous and charming characters, developed from historical myths. One of these characters is Mr. Dob who has featured in Murakami’s work since the 1990s.
Murakami has become recognised as one of the most prominent contemporary artists of his time. Founding the postmodern art movement, ‘Superflat,’ in 2000, he attempted to blur the frontiers between popular art and fine art. In addition to his art practice Murakami’s career has also seen him collaborate with designer Marc Jacobs to create a selection of handbags and accessories for the Louis Vuitton fashion house.
Murakami’s work is on display at Galerie Perrotin, Hong-Kong until Saturday 6 July 2013.
