The Human Scale
Inspired by architect Jan Gehl’s human centric approach to city planning, documentary The Human Scale suggests a new vision for modern cities.
Directed by Andreas Dalsgaard The Human Scale questions our assumptions about modernity. The film explores what happens when we put people into the centre of our equations. As worldwide population grows and undergoes a shift of habitation from rural areas to cities, planners must consider how they accommodate the continued growth.
The work of Jan Gahl is central to the argument. His Copenhagen architectural studio is focused on the premise that lively, vibrant, happy cities are made up of people; predominantly, people engaging in public spaces and with the people around them. Opening the film, a question is posited by Gehl “does the way we build cities invite human interaction, inclusion and intimacy?”
The Human Scale is screening at the Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne, Australia until Friday 12 July 2013.
