The Changing Perception of Bogota
The Colombian capital of Bogota is often known for its dense population, traffic and unsafe areas. Art and design are fast changing the way outsiders look at the capital, enhancing what Colombians are proud about – their rich culture and innovation in design.
fluoro’s Associate editor Audrey Bugeja visited Bogota and was immersed in the changing culture that reflects a vision of the past. What was many years ago a very different city, when the hemisphere’s longest running insurgency was at its peak, has emerged as a cultural capital. Today the streets of the somewhat dark city are made vibrant with street art expressing narratives of native heritage.
Art hubs, local designers and artists are encouraged, with many high-profile organisations supporting venutres. Established designers such as Olga Piedrahita are contributing towards the growth in creativity. Along with exploring her own stunning designs, Piedrahita’s passion for the industry aims to connect the young talent within Colombia to the world.
Bogota based artists like Rafael Gómezbarros, are innovative with their approach to art and are gaining recognition all over the world. Gómezbarros’ work is never far from highlighting political issues in Colombia. Galleries such as Alonso Garces Galeria are also contributing to the cultural wealth of the city, representing a range of artists and partaking in cultural fairs around the world.
The Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogota (MAMBO) is celebrating 50 years in 2013. MAMBO has been a long standing cultural organisation and now a must visit place in the city.
European furniture designers have established showrooms in Bogota and neighbour local brands, with many main streets bursting with furniture design inspiration. Poliform, Zientte, BoConcept are among the designers found in Bogota.
Many new art events and festivals are now permanently on the calendar, celebrating the growing culture and design in Bogota. However, despite the change that comes with such substantial growth, something that remains about Bogota is that heritage is never forgotten.
