Lu Xinjian: City DNA
Acclaimed Chinese artist Lu Xinjian immerses his viewers deep into his paintings, inviting them to navigate a familiar yet redefined landscape.
Xinjian uses technology as a springboard for his creations including commonplace tools such as computers and the Internet. Xinjian’s abstract approach to topography decodes the places that we are familiar with. For his series, ‘City DNA’, the artist has used Google Earth to retrieve a satellite view of a particular city or neighbourhood.
Xinjian simplifies the locale into basic geometric shapes on his computer in order to create a unique new language, through which a city can be viewed. From each painting, viewers can grasp the visual characteristics of a certain city at a glance. Xinjian chooses colour schemes to fit his concept of each city, representing its culture, spirit and his personal impression of those cities he has visited.
Xinjian was born in 1977 in China’s Jiangsu province. His works are currently being showcased through online gallery platform Art Share until Sunday 15 September 2013.
