Balenciaga SS14: Soft Architecture
Pastels, crisp whites and cropping characterised Alexander Wang’s second collection for Balenciaga, Paris Fashion Week SS14.
The predominantly soft palette achieved detail through a series of black and navy floral motifs, sheer overlays and cut out panels. Cropped styles were significant throughout the collection – quilted skirts were accompanied with matching pastel cropped tops. Wang’s architectural style was applied to dresses that featured layered puffed waists and arms.
The collection evoked a sense of sports luxe, seen through bold leather bomber jackets, relaxed fitting trousers and combinations of athletic cropped shorts and singlets. A series of structured trousers and shorts were accompanied with a layered mini-skirt.
While still retaining the sheer panels, and structured silhouettes that Wang is known for, the garments demonstrated a softer approach to design than his first collection for Balenciaga.
