Archivo: New Presence in Mexico City

Archivo, Latin America’s first major design collection will move to a new location Mexico City, in a unique space designed by Zeller & Moye in collaboration with architectural firm FR-EE.

Archivo was established in 2012 with the mission to promote and exhibit the best of industrial design from early 20th century to present. In this short time Archivo’s collection of over 1300 objects is outgrowing its existing gallery space.

Created by design studio Zeller & Moye in collaboration with architectural firm FR-EE, the building where Archivo will be housed, is designed as a raw exoskeleton of six levels that opens up to the exotic surroundings. The structure of the building consists of a vertical core and horizontal floor plates that branch out into the jungle-like garden, creating an unusual mix of indoor and outdoor spaces.

According to Christoph Zeller and Ingrid Moye the design for Archivo represents a new building typology in Mexico City. The vertically stacked open floors, full of life and activity, connect the building with its surroundings. The design challenges the trend for enclosed facades and stimulates an upcoming neighbourhood through culture and design.

The construction of the new Archivo site will commence in late 2014. Zeller & Moye is based in Mexico City and Berlin while FR-EE/Fernando Romero Enterprise has bases in Mexico City and New York.
