Buildering: Misbehaving the City
An exhibition titled Buildering: Misbehaving the City explores how, when used unconventionally, architecture can distort our perception of spaces and cities.
The exhibition takes place at the Contemporary Arts Centre (CAC) in Cincinnati, USA. ‘Buildering’ explains Steven Matijcio, CAC Curator, “is a term coined for the unsanctioned use of architecture – fusing the words ‘building’ and ‘bouldering’ to describe a rapidly growing movement that reformulates how we live the city.”
Beyond vandalism and occupation, the practice of ‘buildering’ becomes a metaphor for the creative misuse of a built structure. By denying the intended function of urban structures the possibility of alternatives are revealed.
This exhibition re-imagines the history of Cincinnati. “The city is seen as a given, fading from view through sheer familiarity, but the artists in this exhibition approach this subject with genuine curiosity, endearment and enthusiasm, imagining new possibilities in something we navigate every day,” says Matijcio.
Buildering: Misbehaving the City will explore this phenomenon from a global perspective, gathering both established and emerging artists from around the world. The artists include Ivan Argote (Colombia/France), Etienne Boulanger (France), Los Carpinteros (Cuba), Kamila Szejnoch (Poland), Lee Walton (USA), Carey Young (UK) and Hector Zamora (Mexico/Brazil). Collectively they will generate a playful, mischievous and lively show with strong socio-cultural underpinning.
Buildering: Misbehaving the City is on display at the CAC, Cincinnati, USA until Monday 18 August 2014.
