OFFF Barcelona 2014: Day One

Crowd Studio, Polynoid and Tendril captured our attention on the first day of OFFF Barcelona 2014. We bring you an insight into what they had to say.

Crowd Studio

Crowd Studio’s presentation discussed the changing role of design in communication. They consider brands made up of people, personality and experience. They believe it is these elements that truly form identity. Keeping this vision in mind, Crowd Studio discussed using changing technology to challenge the level of interaction between brand and individuals. By using these newly available techniques over a variety of interfaces the viewer becomes a brand participant.

Polynoid

Polynoid highlighted that in limitations there is opportunity, something that is particularly relevant to the Berlin-based studio working in the animation industry. One such challenge was working on the renowned Microsoft game, Halo. While the project was a challenge, it opened them to a wealth of opportunity within the gaming industry.

Choosing to open a second affiliated studio, titled Woodblock, has allowed the founders of Polynoid to expand and redefine the clients and ventures that they work on.

Tendril

Speaking in depth about their creative process, Tendril shared a behind the scenes look into their journey establishing an office in Brazil. The team had previously existed solely in Toronto, Canada. To Tendril, experimentation and learning is essential to the growth of their team. This occurs through viewing their studio as a laboratory, with a serious but playful approach to their work.

The message we left with was that as designers they go through the emotions of doubt, fear and inspiration where “priorities become inverted during the creative process.” Highlighting that while one project or concept may be rejected, energy can always be redirect towards another.
