Maharishi and Alexander McQueen: SS15 London Collections
Our eyes turned to Maharishi and Alexander McQueen on Day 2 of London Collections: Men. The difference in the brands’ views of art and urban culture are revealed in their interpretations of the menswear genre.
Maharishi’s SS15 collection entered the world of an urban explorer, presenting a crafted street style with accessories providing protection from the elements. Spray and bomber jackets were worn with trousers cropped mid calf. While garments were accessorised with backpacks, satchels and sturdy boots in the brand’s signature military style. Headwear was a significant part of the SS15 collection, from neck wraps and turbans to a selection of legionnaires caps and bucket hats featuring netted face coverings. A sketch of a world map, printed upon a sweatshirt was a subtle nod to exploration.
McQueen’s SS15 collection presented an overall look that was far from the royal and refined garments of previous collections from McQueen. Suits featured loose trousers worn with sneakers and pointed oxfords, with varying trouser lengths. A selection of trousers were worn loose and cropped just below the knee, in a style that took a turn to street wear. Colour was applied in splices, with cut out shapes in shades of blue, gold and red applied across the garments. Creative Director, Sarah Burton was inspired by the work of iconic French artist Henri Matisse when developing the collection, which can be seen in the application of colour onto the black and white canvas of the garments.
