London Fashion Week SS15 Ready to Wear: So Far
London Fashion Week has kicked off for the SS15 season. We turn our focus to the collections of four influential designers.
J.W. Anderson
Leather was the key to J.W. Anderson’s SS15 garments. The material was applied to dresses, singlets and shorts, with a selection of hats taking the floppy hat concept to new levels. While leather is generally applied as a restrictive and heavy material, Anderson gave it a new lightness, with his applications allowing it to float as lighter fabrics do.
Richard Nicoll
Richard Nicoll’s SS15 collection dazzled with the lights on and continued to do so when darkness set in for the finale. A glowing dress utilising fibre optics floated down the runway and closed the show – the garment was created in collaboration with London-based Studio XO. Throughout the presentation, many of the garments were cinched at the waistline, with loose pants either paired with a crop top or a tucked light singlet.
Paul Smith
A connection to Paul Smith’s history in menswear was evident across his SS15 women’s Ready to Wear collection. Modern and feminine tailoring was applied to the garments, which ranged from light shirts and pants to drop waist dresses. Like Nicoll’s collection, the waistline was a major focus of Paul Smith’s carefully crafted silhouette, with belts used to highlight the area.
Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood’s SS15 collection was paired with slightly theatrical styling. A selection of garments that celebrated the female form was presented and in true Vivienne Westwood style, a political message was infused throughout the collection. Models were seen with ‘Yes’ badges applied to their garments, a signifier of the designer’s support for the Yes campaign for Scottish independence. A statement on the seat of every guest explained her views and support for this act.
