Tokyo International Film Festival: Animation
Taking place next month, the 27th edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) will focus on animation, a genre that is synonymous with the Japanese film culture.
The Festival will open with the World Premiere of Disney’s latest film Big Hero 6 and close with the World Premiere of Parasyte the Japanese blockbuster film. Big Hero 6 is the heart-warming adventure story of Hiro, a 14-year-old robotics prodigy, and a robot called Baymax. The film is set in the fictional metropolis of San Fransokyo (a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo). Parasyte is a film adaption of a Japanese comic by Hitoshi Iwaaki that was published in the magazine Gekkan Afternoon from 1990 to 1995 and sold 11 million copies.
Continuing the focus on animation, the Festival will shed light on the career of Hideaki Anno, one of Japan’s most prominent filmmakers. Anno is best known for his work on the Evangelion anime series, which broadcast during the 1990s. A section of the festival titled The World of Hideaki Anno will be the first-ever major screening occasion to showcase his works. The festival will include screenings of over 40 of Anno’s works, including TV and theatrical animation, short films he created when he was at school, commercial films, and promotional videos.
The 27th edition of TIFF will take place from Thursday 23 – Friday 31 October 204 at Roppongi Hills, TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi, and other venues in Tokyo, Japan.
