Tokyo International Film Festival: Architecture
As the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) approaches, we look to the emphasis of architecture on our experiences.
Titled, Cathedrals of Culture, one particular film screening during the Festival focuses on the relationship between buildings and humans. The film explores the idea that “if buildings could talk, what would they say about us?” and highlights the way that not only do humans influence the shape and essence of buildings, but that they also shape us.
Cathedrals of Culture focuses on the story of six buildings in particular which include the Berlin Philharmonic (Germany), the National Library of Russia (Russia), Halden Prison (Norway), the Salk Institute (USA), Oslo Opera House (Norway) and the Centre Pompidou (France). The film was shot entirely in 3D and brings together the skills of six different filmmakers, who each contributed the story of a different building.
As TIFF returns, we are presented with a series of spaces available to view films, inevitability these spaces will also influence the viewer’s absorption of the film. From opportunities to watch films in parks, dome like spaces and the traditional theatres, the experience of each will no doubt remain unique.
Cathedrals of Culture will screen on Sunday 26 October. The 27th edition of TIFF will take place from Thursday 23 – Friday 31 October 204 at Roppongi Hills, TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi, and other venues in Tokyo, Japan.
