Larry Clark X J.W. Anderson: The Smell of Us
Designer Jonathan Anderson and photographer/film director Larry Clark have teamed up to present a 48-page collaborative photo book titled The Smell of Us.
The photographic series in the book was shot in Paris and features the teenage cast from Clark’s new film who are all dressed in J.W. Anderson pieces. The images creatively explore youth culture by illustrating teenagers roaming around in Paris, expressing themselves in various ways. At the same time the images showcase Anderson’s retro inspired young and vibrant designs featuring zip-up sweaters, knitwear, leather jackets and torn jeans.
The collaboration was united through the focus on youth culture, which is a common element in respectively Clark and Anderson’s work.
Clark is known for his unfiltered, contentious depiction of the world and particularly the youth. His work spans from photography to controversial films. Throughout his career he has used photography to investigate and shine light on critical social issues, particularly those related to youth culture. A special focus in his work is exploring the perils and vulnerabilities of adolescent masculinity.
In a similar manner, Anderson’s brand targets a younger demographic and has become assimilated with experimental, rebellious young designs. Presenting his first runway collection at London Fashion Week in 2010 the designer quickly won critical acclaim and commercial success with an Emerging Talent Award by the British Fashion Council. His designs continue to reflect the freshness of emerging talent despite his establishment as a prominent designer in the fashion world.
The Smell of Us will be available in a limited edition at the end of March 2015 within Document Journal’s Spring/Summer 2015 issue.
