EARS: Floating Tokyo
Street artist Daniel O’Toole, known as EARS, has launched a new EP titled Floating Tokyo, as part of Vivid Sydney.
The EP offers a 6-track journey narrated by a film clip created from a collage of footage shot by EARS while exploring the vibrant streets of Tokyo.
The original sound track was composed based on EARS’ love of Tokyo and admiration of Asian cultures and folk music. A recent trip to Japan inspired the film clip complimenting the new musical track. The clip reveals a collage of footage that delves into the elusive exploration of identity and belonging of his subject.
Employing a variety of techniques including colour play, repetition, mirroring and overlapping of double exposed photographs, EARS created a unique interpretation of Tokyo. The artist also creates photographic works in which the subject is viewed through a transparent layer, altered with paint, wax and other textural distortions. These images, which blur the line between painting and analogue photography have become the source of inspiration for his painting and video works.
EARS is best known for his street art including public murals with a distinct figurative street art style. Now the multi-disciplinary artist has expanded his work to include a unique musical style that connects image and sound in way that links to his elaborate, carefully considered murals.
The EP has launched today (AEST) at Ambush Gallery, Sydney, Australia. A launch event will see the artist in a live musical performance accompanied by a screening of the new film clip for the title track Floating Tokyo.
