Marina Abramović: In Residence
Kaldor Public Art presents an extensive 12-day public engagement program that celebrates the organisation’s 30th project, titled Marina Abramović: In Residence.
For 45 years Kaldor Public Art Projects has organised revolutionary projects with international artists in public spaces, changing the landscape of contemporary art in Australia through projects that resonate around the world. Featuring more than 40 talks, film screenings and panel discussions the latest 12-day program will be presented in a broad philosophical and cultural context focusing on the mind, the self, the present and awareness.
Delving into these themes a number of events will be taking place.
Five sessions of Lunchtime Philosophy will be held from Monday 29 June – Friday 3 July 2015 between 12.30pm – 1.30pm (AEST) at Pier 2/3 in Sydney, Australia. Each of these will be followed by talks presented by artists and professors, encouraging the audience to reflect upon and share their own insights.
During the evenings of the 12-day program, Evenings in Residence, an informal, stimulating and slightly unpredictable program will be presented by 12 Australian as well as international artists. As part of this program, the 12 Residency Artists will present films that have inspired them as well as ideas and thoughts that occupy their minds. The public will be invited to enter the creative environment of the artists, to engage in performance, workshops, conversations and debates. Evenings in Residence will be presents from Wednesday 24 June – Sunday 5 July at 5.00 – 7.00pm (AEST) at Pier 2/3, Sydney.
Headlining the Kaldor Public Art Projects’ Public Engagement Program is the Keynote Address by world-renowned performance artist Marina Abramović. Known for exploring and pushing the boundaries between performer and audience, the limits of the body and the possibilities of the mind Abramović represents the essence of the program’s overall themes. Taking place at Roslyn Packer Theatre in Sydney, Australia the talk will reflect on the artist’s journey towards immaterial art, her transformative engagement with audiences and the effect of long-durational performances. According to the artist, her performance in Sydney is set to completely change the rules:
“I will be like a conductor in the exhibition space, but it will be the public who will take the physical and emotional journey. We constantly like to be entertained, to get things from outside. We never take time to get in touch with ourselves… our inner self. My function in this new kind of performance situation is to show you, through the Abramovic Method, what you can do for yourself. I wanted to make this big change because I understood that actually you can’t get any experience by me doing it for you… So I’m completely shifting the paradigm, changing the rules.”
The Keynote Address forms Abramović’s only public talk in Australia during her 2015 tour and will be presented on Tuesday 30 June at 8.00pm (AEST) at Pier 2/3, Sydney. Beside the Keynote Address, Abramović and her team will be onsite at Pier 2/3 from 12.00 – 7.00pm (AEST) daily during the full 12-day program to lead visitors through a series of transformative experiences that will challenge their focus and question their perceptions about art.
The 12-day Kaldor Public Art Projects’ Public Engagement Program will take place from Wednesday 24 June – Sunday 5 July.
