Imago Mundi: Map of the New Art
The Luciano Benetton Collection presents a new contemporary art exhibition titled Imago Mundi: Map of the New Art.
The exhibition contains works commissioned and collected by Luciano Benetton, co-founder of the Benetton Group, during his travels to more than 40 countries across the world.
Opening during the 56th Venice Biennale it forms the largest of the Luciano Benetton Collection to date featuring 6,930 works by emerging as well as established artists. Each of these artists has created an art piece, with only one constraint – a format of 10x12cm.
The thousands of small artworks will come together to form a map that crosses the continents, displaying and representing a variety of countries from a variety of time periods. The pieces span in diversity from a tormented Afghanistan and a post-Mandela South Africa, to a Cuba opening itself to reform and a cultured Iceland. The artworks stretches further across Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, United States, Latin America, Russia, China and Mongolia.
Map of New Art supports the Imago Mundi mission of pushing the horizons of art through works that transcend borders and break cultural boundaries. It also represents the Luciano Benetton Collection’s efforts to unite the world in the name of common artistic experiences.
Imago Mundi: Map of the New Art will be on display from Tuesday 1 September – Sunday 1 November 2015 at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy.
