An Imagined Museum
An Imagined Museum works from the Pompidou, Tate and MMK collections sees three key European art museums unite to bring together over 60 major artworks from 1945 onwards.
The theme of the exhibition is an ‘imagined museum’ which draws on major influences from dystopian writer Ray Bradbury’s 1953 science fiction novel Fahrenheit 411. The literary classic narrates a distant future where works of literature are banished, the only way to see their survival is to memorise the stories by heart – eternalising them.
With this logic, the pieces in the exhibition will require viewers to memorise the artworks, as in the final weekend of the exhibition, the artworks will have left the gallery. At this point they will be substituted with members of the public who will recollect and interpret the artwork’s intellectual, aesthetic and emotional value.
Curated by Francesco Manacorda, artistic director at Tate Liverpool, and members from MMK Museum, and Centre Pompidou, An Imagined Museum will see a collection of over 60 well-known artworks. Produced from 1945 onwards the works are by some of the most prestigious European and international artists, including Marcel Duchamp, On Kawara, Claes Oldenburg, Sigmar Polke, Bridget Riley, Dorothea Tanning, Andy Warhol and Rachel Whiteread.
The works on display include Andy Warhol’s iconic 100 Campbell’s Soup Cans, Claes Oldenburg’s Soft Typewriter and Bridget Riley’s Fall, as well as many more major artworks which represent major milestones in artistic creation from the last 70 years.
Viewers will be immersed in the ingenuity of the artworks, exploring meaning and celebrating artistic expression, and the values that art can bring into our lives, at present and in the future. The exhibition asks why we should venture to save art, leaving us with the response that art has the ability to transform the everyday, alter perceptions, celebrate the enigmatic and to anticipate the future.
